7 January 2015 - In search of a post office and an afternoon movie

One of the good things about travelling slowly is that we are not committed to early morning schedules and so this morning was a bit slower paced. This, unfortunately meant that we missed out on doughnuts in Lumpini Park.  All was not lost as we made up for the disappointment by counting the giant monitor lizards (previously and possibly incorrectly referred to as goannas).  Luke counted 17 of the giant scavengers and Tim nearly jumped on one as he bounded off a low fence.

In search of the delicious passion fruit we bought the other day we headed up Rama iv Road.  The stall we bought them from wasn't there.  I had some banana and sticky rice in a banana leaf.  We wandered further to find a market which really isn't hard as there are markets and stalls on most streets!  It all seems so normal to us after such a short time! We bought 2 kgs of passion fruit for 100 Baht and two sensational mangoes for 140 Baht per kg.
Stalls come and they go
It seemed to be a slightly seedier part of town with "beds for naps" for rent at hourly rates but was fine in the daylight.  Our mission to find a post office was accomplished.  There really are not many post offices around.  I was able to finally send some post cards that have been floating around in my day pack for a week or so!

Walking along the paths in the morning traffic is a bit daunting.  Stopping at red lights and pedestrian crossings seem to be optional.  The pack of motor bikes takes off first and there are very few bicyclists! One good thing is the display of seconds until the next light change next to the traffic lights and the motorists start zooming as soon as the countdown has ended.
Countdown to "GO"
So we headed home after our longish walk and we made sticky rice with mango for lunch!  Annika, Tim and I cannot get enough of it!!!
Smile - Thais are gentle lovely people with ready smiles and gracious manners.

Tim has been itching to go to a movie.  We walked to Centre World to the huge cinema complex there and were in luck to find "Big Hero 6" showing in an hour of so.  Tickets 120 Baht each (less than $5AUD).  In the foyer Luke was kept glued to the promotion for the "Frozen Sing-a-long".  We went with Karl to "Super rich", just before the canal, to change money as it was giving the best rate.  The spruikers were out in force trying to call us in.  The best exchange rate for $AUD was 26.45 Baht. We also discovered a large supermarket: Big C, close by which is handy for larger shopping items instead of the pricey 7-11.  The things we discover....
Mesmorised!

I find the view from the escalator somewhat scary as there is very little protective railing.
Karl opted not to see the movie but the kids and I loved it.  We joined the other cinema goers in standing to the Thai National Anthem prior to the main feature.  The "turn off your mobile phone" ad was amusing and the seats were extremely comfortable with great leg room.  We would all rate our movie afternoon highly!
After the movie!
The kids were really feeling like a bit of Western food and bought some delicious pizzas from a street bakery.  It has been so long since we have had bread or cheese and these pizzas tasted magnificent.
Just what we needed!

Fountain antics - boys will be boys!
