We headed off through Lumpini Park to Christ Church Bangkok for their 10AM English service. The church was full when we arrived and the service had already started. Rev Tim Eady gave a great sermon about temptation with a humourous paraphrase of Matthew 4: 1-11.
The congregation is multinational and we were privileged to witness three baptisms: a Singaporean young woman, a Japanese young woman and a Thai-English young man. The congregation all went outside where the people being baptised precariously climbed up (and down) a ladder into a tank of water and then we went back into the building. Karl and I remembered we had seen a baptism in the Deloraine River in Tasmania on our honeymoon. There are many different possibilities for baptisms!

We joined the congregation for their delicious community lunch again of Thai chicken curry and omelette and rice followed by guava and papaya. Quite a feast! We chatted to a retired Norwegian Merchant sailor and a Nepalese family while Luke enjoyed playing with the other children. It is a very welcoming place!

We also fulfilled our mission of finding the plaque on the wall depicting my late aunt's father, C.W. Norwood, when he was vicar at Christ Church from 1935 -1940. He returned to England before trouble times with WW2 hit Bangkok. His successor was interned during the war.

1935-1940 C.W.Norwood - hard to see because of reflection, but there it was! |
I loved the thought for the week in the Church newsletter was : "Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance. The only thing it cannot be is moderately important." (C.S. Lewis)
It is funny how quickly "traditions" seem to be established. The kids thought we should stop for an ice cream on the way home "because we did it last time"!...and so we did!
Our walk back through the festival in Lumpini Park was worthwhile. There were food stalls of course! We saw traditional Thai dancing and listened to traditional Thai instruments. There were all sorts of small industries with their displays. The silk weaving was beautiful and so tempting to buy but we can't carry any more! The best one was the organic coffee stall. Luke helped stir the beans been roasted in little butane cylinder heated woks which were then ground by hand and brewed into strong but tasty coffee. His blonde hair attracts the attention of the Thais and he features on many of their photos!

We had a relaxed afternoon back at our condo which included the mandatory swim after dinner.
Th Helen for your post and including the photo of Grandpa's term of residency. Lucky they came on the Aust and avoided internment. Who knows what would have happened otherwise!
ReplyDeleteThe family history is SO interesting and so tangible when you actually see a name on a plaque! Did he and his family then migrate to Australia?
DeleteSorry - only just saw this. Yes Helen - they came to Aust from Thailand rather than return to the UK. They didn't get back to England until after the war; their Siamese Ayah, who had looked after the children came to Aus and then on to England.
