Weather forecast: 9-14 C and rain and it is midsummer!! We had a little giggle to ourselves. Having said that most of us got a bit pink from the sun yesterday so we are not complaining, just mentioning!

Snails quite like this weather...bit different from our snails at home! |
Tim and I went for our wet morning walk and even Tim wore a coat! We
returned pretty drenched but glad of the exercise. The canal is lovely
at any time but the canal traffic was light this morning as I suppose
most of the boaters had decided to have a slow morning given that most
boats don't have covered steering areas. At the risk of been seen as
voyeuristic, it is quite nice to peek into canal boats on the way past
and see the occupants drinking coffee, playing cards or cooking
breakfast!

Look who is watching the canal from the bridge! |
The big kids had to undertake "discovery learning projects" for their
for fortnight back at school. They have quite enjoyed getting back into
the swing of school and have adapted to the self-directed learning
nature of distant education really well. One of Annika's teachers put
her in touch with another girl who is travelling (but around Australia)
and they have lots in common. Hopefully they'll meet up some day,
somewhere!!

Luke helping a canal boater open the lock! |
Luke, being creative and missing access to all his toys, has now
collected five boxes and built temples for his Lego Minifigures. It is
great to hear him play out the things we've seen. It's funny hearing
about the things he notices such as a stool made out of an elephant's
foot, complete with toenails and all the fossils on floors. He has no
qualms about getting down and inspecting them closely!
We
absolutely HAD to go out for a walk this afternoon, despite the
continual rain, and we headed for the big shopping centre via the
canal. As luck would have it, Luke got to help with opening the lock
gates! Life is full of good experiences when you are 7 years old and
cute.

Another UK snail ! |
At Tescos I noticed I was given some refund vouchers with a
few shops and I wondered what they were all about. Apparently, it is
money back, on your NEXT shop, for items which you may have found
cheaper elsewhere. Now that is clever marketting with a few outcomes:
1) you return to shop there because you have a voucher and you don't
want to lose money, so they keep your custom,2) you lose your voucher so
they benefit as they keep the money they overcharged you and 3) you
feel like they'll be fair so you shop there anyhow!

One of the historic signs...but who would want a cold bath in this weather?!! |
We trouped around the Pound Shop, Poundland and the 99p Shop looking for Eurpoean to UK power adaptors as our printer is European. We found one eventually but were struck by why a fairly small city needs 3 of these shops so close to each other!
Being Friday night, we sat down to watch "Child Genius" on BBC which is an entertaining but educational program seeking the genius child of UK. The kids are amazing but some of the parents are SO pushy.
