16 December 2014 - Walk to Phuket Aquarium and other musings

Tim and I decided to try some pancakes from the lady who cooks in front of Loh’s shop.  Banana and egg pancakes with a choice of condensed milk or chocolate syrup drizzled on them.  Her stall is clean and popular which is a pretty good indication that it is ok.  We are not sure what mixture she uses for the pancakes but it is a dough like mix which she kneads and stretches with oil then fries.  Probably more like a roti than a pancake.  Delicious but not too sweet. She is a real artist and great cook.    We got a plain pancake with chocolate sauce on it as well (65 baht) and the “doughnut man” we bought some puffed doughnutty balls for 2 Baht each.  Fuel in our tummies, we started our walk to Phuket Aquarium, 2 kms from   here.

Pancakes for breakfast!  This dear lady works 7 days a week.

Phuket Aquarium was excellent. We encountered lots of school kids, presumably on their end of year excursions.  The display was not huge but extremely interesting especially for our little nature lover, Luke.  There were cowfish, cat fish, clown fish and boxing shrimps but it was the moray eel that stole the show…it looked like a muppet performing on Sesame Street!  The aquarium is situated on Cape Panwa one of the southern tips of Phuket Island and the outlook over the shimmering water to the distant islands is truly beautiful.  This is not an area overrun with tourists and apart from a few offers for taxis, you can walk along the promenade unhindered.

Moray eel

Is it a muppet??  Love this Moray Eel.

As it was lunch time we thought we would try a noodle-soupish dish from a food cart.  This cart had loads of local customers so we took that as good recommendation. We initially bought one dish to sample and share but before long, we’d bought 5 bowls full and were sitting at the little table provided on a straw mat slurping up the thick rice noodles and ripping soup down our chins.  Luke, always reluctant to try new food ended up loving the thick noodles which we called “Moray eels” to entice him.  So, from now on, our family name for these noodles will be “Moray eels”!!  Our lunch time entertainment was watching local “electricians” climb up bamboo ladders to fix the many twisted wires attached to the power pole – no helmets, in thongs and shorts…..Our walk home was easy after that lovely lunch and an icecream en route.

Not quite complying to safety standards!

And, yes, the afternoon merged into evening whilst we were swimming in the 150 metre pool, cooling off and reflecting on our day. And yes, we had a variety of Halal sausages from the “Sausage Lady’s cart with rice and veggies for dinner.
