I was keen to get up and moving pretty quickly to make the
most of the day. Karl was keen to
reflect and study a statistical package called “R”. Clearly, our plans for the day differed
hugely. Karl is probably finding us all
a bit overwhelming without an office to retreat to, so it was win-win really
when I decided to take the kids to Old Phuket Town to look at the Sino-Colonial
architecture and he could stay back here at the apartment. We got our regular delicious pancakes on the
way. Luke accidentally left his backpack
at the table there but we knew it would be safe with our Pancake Lady, and so
it was.
Old Sino-Colonial buildings |
It is an unseasonal wet time in Phuket so the morning was a
bit drizzly. The advantage of this is
that it is a little cooler and was a nice morning for walking. The colourful
buildings in the old town are really pretty and the kids really liked looking
up to specifically notice the buildings instead of watching their feet. The streets are actually quite clean and the
footpaths not too uneven. We happened
upon a temple and wandered through the grounds.
Grand gold and red against the dim sky.
Temple on the outskirts of Phuket Old Town |
Luke’s Velcro on his shoes has been slowly deteriorating and
today it gave up completely. As we were
wandering back we happened upon a dressmaker/tailor sitting in her little open
shop sewing/repairing clothes. I
indicated the Velcro was worn and she happily fixed up both of Luke’s shoes for
us on the spot – and refused any payment.
How very nice!!
Good as new! |
Next stop was for a massage.
I had promised the big kids that they could have a Thai massage at some
point. Close to our bus stop “N and
friend” Massage (which is listed on Trip Advisor) offered I hour traditional
Thai massage for 250 Baht – so Tim and Annika enjoyed a lovely massage which
started with a foot wash. I entertained
Luke in the cool of their waiting area and opted for a 30 minute foot massage
after they had finished (150 Baht) …I could have stayed there for MUCH longer,
but Luke really had reached his limit of waiting. He was happy enough to show off his new
Batman suit which attracted a little attention which he loves.
Bliss! |
There seem to be more tourists this week but Cape Panwa is
really quiet. According to a local Irishman,
this is the quietest tourist season in 10 years partly due to the coup and
partly due to the fall in the Russian Rouble which has deterred the usual
number of Russian tourists. We thought
there were enough tourists already so we are glad we’ve come at a quiet time!
The other news of the day is that one of the toilets is
blocked which we hope will be rectified soon!!
The kids are absolutely loving the pools and making good use
of them. Tim is a regular at the gym and
seems to be the only one using it seriously.
