8 April 2015 - Our first family drive in our Peugot lease car as we headed for Weingarten

Morning by Bermatingen pond
Yet another clear blue sky morning to greet us and Tim rounding us up for a walk to enjoy it!  I am really glad that we all love the great outdoors!

Race to the seat!

First blossoms...
We walked up Jagerstrasse back towards the pond and fields we passed yesterday.  Once we got to the wanderweg, the temptation was to walk and walk and  walk but we chose the 2 km walk back to our house as it was officially a school morning!
Another lovely cross on a hill top
What a great place to live!  Fields, fresh air, good roads to main towns, great views to the Alps and a friendly little town and a railway and bus.  What more would you want?!
Ah!  In full blossom at last and with days like today, there'll be more soon.
And so it was school for the morning with reasonable progress!  I actually think Luke has learned more from my intense supervising of him than he would have sitting in class being "good" but doing virtually no work and getting away with it.  I am thinking he spent most of his energy just being good and very little on productive work!  Maybe this year will pay off in ways we'd never know!

Weingarten bakery stop!

Our purpose for our drive to Weingarten was two fold.  One was to purchase a child's booster seat for our car from a big retailer which would be "gunstig" (cheap!) and the other was to go to the St Martin's Basilica which we had seen from the hill in Ravensburg on Saturday.

Karl at the wheel on the right side of the road did a great job.  Our journey was a detoured one as the motorway was closed for resurfacing and we had to watch carefully for all the detour signs.  We missed the "unmissable" Toys'R'Us shop but spotted "Real", a chain store that we had recognised from Turkey!
Luke devouring his slice of pizza!

Joyous anticipation of pommes!

Pea soup!!
It was heading to uber lunch time and so we stopped in Weingarten first for some food.  We found a car park which looked as if it was free and headed off in search of food. Karl and I shared a sensational pea soup (huge amount for 1.70 Euro) which was a break from the bready lunches we have been having.
Beautiful buildings but plenty of "bogans' here!
Karl and I were really keen to see the Basilica and dragging the fairly reluctant kids toward the Basilica I encountered some Jehovah's Witnesses.  The kids HATE it when I stop to talk!  I felt mildly tempted to mention the young pregnant woman and her baby who died a few days ago because they refused a blood transfusion BUT I didn't.  I was polite enough and the kids calling for me to come relieved me of the JW's  spiel.
Grand statue, bigger than it looks in the photo.

St Martin's Basilica, Weingarten

Long pilgrimage!

Courtyard gymnastics!

Sundial - not very accurate during daylight savings!

The correct time!

Even Tim conceded that it was really worthwhile going inside St Martin's Basilica.  The pristine interior had the most beautiful paintings, frescoes and reliefs and was so ornate, it was breath taking.  The bright light from the sunny day outside lit up the entire interior and the white of the walls shone like fresh snow.  Luke nearly fell over backwards tilting his head far back to take in the painted ceiling.  In the end, he lay down on the floor so he could get a good look.  Even, he, appreciated the need for absolute silence in such a place.

Frescoes and reliefs lit up  by the sun

Magnificent pipe organ

How I would love to have walked along the balcony!

The pulpit!

Stunning

Heaven

Mesmerised!

Red painted Easter eggs make a wonderful piece

Marquetry pews!

Wandering around the surroundings and hitting a few dead ends, we finally found our way out and headed back to our car.

Old walls of the abbey

The car seat expedition was great.  We found a cheap booster seat as hoped in Real and also did the rest of our grocery shopping.  it was a luxury to carry it home in a car!  We even found some new Asics trainers for Tim for 50 Euro - bargain!!!!  We have been looking for shoes for him since Turkey but his size 48 feet exclude him from many stores!
Getting used to the "other" side!

Our lease car: Luke "unboxing" his car seat!
The drive home around all the detours was ok.  We got home safely in daylight and good weather.  We saw another zeppelin flying over and managed to get a good view this time!
We could even see the pilot!

Being Wednesday, our mouths were watering for more of the cooked chicken we had bought from "Der Hahn vom Bodensee Cooked Chicken" van last Wednesday.  Disappointingly, he didn't have any chickens ready for us when we wanted to buy our dinner.  We opted for some sensational spare ribs instead which were more expensive but not regretted!  We'll know for next Wednesday!!!

  1. It's become part of my morning routine, to read about your adventures over a cup of tea, before anyone else is up. Thank you for your wonderful photos and sharing your daily experiences with me :) I'll have to get up earlier once school goes back, but look forward to this early morning ritual. Another wonderful day, what a beautiful place! Xx

  2. Wow Jane! I'll try not to disappoint....it is my daily discipline, otherwise I will forget the things we have done....and once we are home, who knows what I'll do!. I was one of those teenagers who kept diaries and have journalled on and off over the years, but this blog is the first time I have shared with others. Enjoy your Autumn and last bit of school holidays!...and of course your quiet morning cuppa.
