14 April 2015 - Forest scrambling: finding our inner wild people!

I accompanied Tim for half of his morning walk today as he requested.  He wanted to run about 5 kms and so I turned left at the cross roads and continued over the fields.  I really enjoyed some time to myself to ponder and pray and embrace the view before me.

It was just by chance, really, that we came to rest in Bermatingen for a month.  Staying in big cities is much more expensive and we have already stayed in Bangkok, New Delhi and Istanbul which are very noisy crowded cities, so we thought we would be ready for some time away in the countryside.  After searching for budget accommodation which would suit us, I came across this place and we have loved it.  Who wouldn't enjoy daily doses of alp views and vineyards, fresh air and twittering birds?

Morning view!
We balanced the school day with a walk before lunch which refreshed everyone.  All the local kids seem to be coming home from school as they have shorter school days than we do.  I did think that this would be very hard for mothers who choose to work as their kids aren't at school for many hours.

After more school time, which was reasonably productive, everyone was ready for the forest!  We came across a little flock of sheep with their baby lambs.  The lambs positively spin their tails when they feed - a reflex our Aussie lambs miss out on once their tails are docked (for the good reason to prevent maggot infestation from flies in their tails).

Number 45 and 46!

A little lamb with its tail in helicopter mode!
As soon as we could we went "off piste" as the kids said, in other words off the beaten track and following the ruts of forestry vehicle tracks.  We had some fun building forest cubbies with the felled branches and I think that Tim was enjoying being a wild man.  It was heaps of fun.  The tricky part was descending down three quite steep embankments to rejoin a main track which were slippery and prickly and sent Luke's anxiety levels high.  He probably scared off any deer we had had a chance of seeing!  We scrambled down, with Tim in the lead and lots of forest in our shoes!  Quite exhilarating really!

Dinner, looking out at the street view of historic houses and distant vineyards, was potatoes, schnitzel and vegetables.  We are eating like the natives!
