28 March 2015 - Finding our feet in Bermatingen

We all slept so soundly in our cosy historic home with its floors at odd angles and low beams and lights that threaten to connect with Tim and Karl's heads. It was so quiet and we were so tired after our travel and our week of full on activity that we were really ready for a lovely sleep in.

With no internet yet, we feel that Wi-Fi should now be officially added to Maslow's hierarchy of basic needs...we are very keen to connect with the rest of the world ASAP!  So, with breakfast eaten, we set out to explore.

Bermatingen is a small village in the Bodensee region of Germany known for its grapes and wines and also apples.  There are little apple stalls on the streets and we are yet to try these. The houses are mostly historic or built in a similar style and the footpaths are narrow and roads just accommodate one lane of cars each way.  We think this area was established in the 13th Century but will know more once the Tourist Information office is open on Monday.

It really is very pretty walking around here with neat houses and spring flowers in bloom.  It could definitely win one of those Tidy Town awards!  After some searching, and a stop at a bakery for croissants and pretzels, we found the supermarket.  The people here speak a surprisingly small amount of English and I try really hard with my high school German!  We found out that there are no internet cafes here or in the nearby villages but that Friedrichshafen should have somewhere for us to use the internet.  The problem being, then, how our host can return an email without us having internet access.

Delicious pretzels from here...gobbled before I could take a photo!
We decided to buy a sim card and a local man told us that the service station sold them.  So, we bought a sim card only to discover that we needed internet access to activate it!  Getting fairly desperate by this time, 4 PM on a Saturday, we knocked on our neighbour's door.  Marcus, our neighbour, was very helpful and kindly let us have access to his internet and hence I can now write my blog and upload it!

After dinner, we huddled around Tim's laptop to watch "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" and check out all the scenes from the Schilthorn and other places we have just visited.  It was excellent fun but we only got half way through the movie because the kids were tired.  Tomorrow night we will finish watching it!  AND then, there seems to be a whole raft of movies we should watch as they have been filmed in places we have visited !

  1. Fun day! Glad you have a generous neighbour and hope you find a way to get internet! How frustrating when you do all the planning and don't get the basics!! Looks like a lovely place to stay for a while though. I might have to watch 'the sound of music" now. Xx
